Bankhead (an authentic "Southern Belle" from Alabama) was the clear front-runner, but her unsavory personal life made producers reluctant to hire her.

Sorry, but I cannot picture Lucille Ball in that role. And some of these ladies I've never heard of. But I could easily see Kate Hepburn flashing eyes at Clark Gable!

Bette Davis made the movie Jezebel in an attempt to prove she could play the part of a southern belle. I think that every female around wanted that part! *s*
