Well, I thought I'd hear from more of you, but then, Tootsie is an old movie!  A fun one, though.

This is one of my all-time favorite movies! I know the answer--it was chocolate-covered cherry candies!

Saturday's question was about the Christmas comedy fluff "Deck the Halls".  Danny DeVito's goal is for his house to be seen from space on "My Earth"--much to Matthew Broderick's dismay. 

Question: Near the end of the movie, what do Buddy and Steve do to bring their families back home to them?


They took Buddy's lights and made a trail all the way from the hotel back to the house, where Buddy and Steve had cooked a Christmas meal.

No one had an answer for me this week--most of you probably hadn't seen it.  This was the first year I did, and though it wasn't that good, it was an easy movie to multi-task to!

Pothole's voice

Well, I did a (very) little digging, and found out our gal who does the voiceover for the pothole isn't even blond! I coulda sworn she was!

Her name is Dayci and here's her picture:

Her resume says she was educated in Chapel Hill, NC,  (Sorry, Jen!) and that she can do several different accents.  I'm thinking this is the accent that'll get her more jobs.

Okay, a small segue into another subject: Movie Trivia.  I took the month of October off while dealing with J-Man's illness and Howloween and now November's half over.  (Sheesh!  Where was I?)

Is this something y'all want to continue or is everybody tired of the game?  I'm going to watch movies anyway, so it's whatever you folks want to do. Let's see if I can manage one of those polls in my sidebar, but if I can't, just comment and let me know your choice.

 In the movie, "To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar", what theme for the Strawberry Festival did the women decide on?

Mighty Mom got the answer: Red hot and Wild!  (She emailed me with the answer after watching it and I forgot to post it in the comments.)

It's one of my  favorite "men in drag" comedies,  3rd only to "The BirdCage" and my #1 favorite: "Tootsie".

Movie Trivia Answer 9/19

Okay, this week's questions were about the movie "Changeling" with Angelina Jolie and John Malkovich.

1. What was unusual (by today's standards) about the equipment worn by the telephone operator's supervisor in the 1920s?  Maggie and Jen got this one correct--the supervisors wore roller skates and skated quickly from one operator to another along a long wall of, um, whatever those were--switchboards, I think they were called. She had her own set of headphones that she plugged into the switchboard to speak to the caller.

2. Why was Stanford Clark originally brought to the police station?  The boy was brought in because he was a Canadian citizen currently staying with his uncle in the US, and was apparently seen in another town.  The police brought him in to ship him back to Canada.
 
This is a disturbing movie, on several levels, but Angelina did a terrific job--very understated and subtle, but effective.  Just plan to watch something light afterwards to pull yourselves back out of the glooms.

Movie Trivia Answer 6/27

Julie Mills got the correct answer: it WAS Penelope Ann Miller who played Brenda. I couldn't place the voice until the old lady stole her glasses--and then I knew who she was.

This was only her second movie, but she was in several TV shows before that.

As for the bonus question? Well, the title of that movie was Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead. Keith Coogan played Christina Applegate's stay-at-home budding chef brother.

I thought maybe the phrasing of the question would tip off the answer.

As for the contest I haven't put together all the details on the prize yet, but there will be more than one package to choose from.

Remember this mindless bit of entertainment, starring Elisabeth Shue as a date-jilted high school senior who spends the evening babysitting 3 kids? Thankfully, none of my babysitting experiences were nearly as adventurous, though there was that pair of 5-year-old twins I used to watch.....

Anyway, I'm sure by now everyone knows that "Thor" (Mr. Dawson of Dawson's Garage) is Vincent D'Onofrio, of Law and Order: Criminal Intent fame. But do you remember who played Brenda, Kris's friend who's stuck at the bus station?

Bonus question: Brad (Keith Coogan) played the brother in another parentally unsupervised movie 4 years later. What was the name of that movie?

Movie Trivia Answer 6/20

There weren't many guesses this week, so either everyone's all busy with outdoor and vacation stuff or not many of you have seen this movie.

It's an old one--25 years old, to be exact. Sally won the Oscar for this performance, and if you haven't seen it, it'd be worth putting this title on your Netflix queue and making a run to the store for extra Kleenex.

Sally's husband, the Sheriff, is shot and killed, and to keep the homeplace in the Depression, she must make some really tough decisions.


The day of the funeral, Moze (Danny Glover) comes by for a handout, and repays the kindness by stealing some of the silverware. When the local lawman brings him back to her house, "Miz Spaulding" covers for him, but recruits him to help her plant cotton. Her threat makes me chuckle every time.

Annie nailed the bonus question. Mr. Will (John Malkovich) is the blind brother-in-law of the banker, who bullies Miz Spaulding into taking Mr. Will in as a paying boarder. Mr. Will canes chairs and makes brooms for a living.

It's an awesome movie, one of my 5-star favorites!

Movie Trivia Answer--2 days late!

All I can say for myself is that I work nights and when I'm off 2 nights (equal to one day), and work again, and repeat the cycle, my body takes longer and longer to reset. I wake up at 3pm not knowing if I'm supposed to work and can sleep another hour, or if I've just slept half my off day away.

SOOOO--Annie got it! Life is Beautiful is the story of a family at a Nazi Concentration Camp and the lengths the father goes to for them. He makes a game of it for their small son, and they strive to win 1000 points, with the grand prize being a tank.

I couldn't believe it'd been out 12 years already and I hadn't seen it. It was such a heartwarming story.
