Uneventful Week

Not much is going on in Scrapsville--well, not much of interest.  There is always work, and always housework. I did get my first full paycheck since early September.  The bank account breathed a little sigh of relief.  I figured out, I only worked 4 days in October.  I was on call sometimes, and I took PDO, but only 4 shifts did I actually work. Except for the pay, I could get used to that!

Took the hammock down this week. Raked 17 bags of leaves--and there are at least 3 times that many still out there, but I ran out of bags.  Got most of the Halloween stuff packed away, but I need to buy another plastic bin.  I'm considering a small storage facility for the Halloween and Christmas bins, as well as the boxes of past tax information, the bedside commode we got, but never used, the artificial Christmas tree, and the boxes of milkglass I own, but have no place to display.  The garage is getting a little crowded.

Let's see: what else?  I took a couple of boxes to the vocational thrift shop to donate, exchanged some items I bought for the J-Man which were the wrong size, and dropped off a shoebox of toys at a local church for Samaritan's Purse.  I made up the box last year and missed the deadline, and would have missed it this year, too, except I heard it mentioned on the local radio station. I had every intention of making up a couple more, but didn't realize the deadline was so soon.

Oh, and took Tandi to the vet for routine bloodwork.  Since we are going up to DD's this Fri. (a 7.5-hr drive), I wanted something to settle her down.  She doesn't like riding in the car and she freaks out at rest stops with all the people and the noise.  He gave her something he calls "Doggy Prozac" that won't sedate her, but will ease her anxiety.  I hope it works. Our last dog loved car rides, but Tandi is so neurotic.  She's also about 5 pounds over what she weighed last year, so she and I started walking some.  We won't talk about my weight, except to laugh hysterically at the mere thought of a 5lb weight loss making a difference.

I finished one of my UFOs, but haven't taken a picture yet.  I need to do that and mark it off Finn's list.

BTW, I'm leaving the poll open until Monday night, so let me know how you feel about continuing the movie trivia game.  There have been only 4 votes so far, maybe because I haven't posted much lately and people haven't seen the poll.  If most all are in favor, I'll restart it next weekend.  What the heck, it's a holiday and a good time to watch movies--if you can outvote the football watchers, or find another TV!

Still wandering that desert....

My schedule has been all jumbled, and there was a lot I planned to accomplish on several consecutive days off, but as usual--my list was unrealistic.

I had a single night off in the midst of work nights, so slept all day and stayed up all night rather than mess my body up even more. A couple of hours was spent trying to catch up on some blogger posts--the reader list was at 118! And I updated my blog--took it back down to two columns and played with the colors.

Then I spent a long while researching some Halloween how-tos. Omigosh, am I ever an amateur compared to what's out there! It's a bit comforting that mine is the best in the neighborhood, but when I see what is possible? Holy cow! Then again, it's only me doing my yard. Some of these places take food bank donations and have a half dozen folks helping.

If you're a Halloween nut, here are some great places to visit:

http://www.pumpkinrot.com/
http://halloween.com/
http://www.terrorsyndicate.com/
http://hauntproject.com/
http://spookyblue.com/
http://www.halloweenhouse.org/
http://www.britta.com/HW/index.html

If you're not, don't go there.

I am itching to get started in my own yard, but it's too early to put anything out. Looking forward to some days off to start building some props and aging some of the foam tombstones I ordered. I know some people make their own, but working with styrofoam (for me) is akin to fingernails on a blackboard; sets my teeth on edge. Some of my orders have come in, and I raided the dollar store the other day, but I haven't hit Michael's, Wal-Mart, or Garden Ridge yet (which I've heard of, but never visited.) Nor have I attended many yard sales lately--it's been too hot for most folks, but the weather is cooling off.

Oh, and I uploaded my 3 Midnight Syndicate CDs on the iPod in preparation for the party and the Big Night. I cleaned out a closet and found a clear shower curtain I'd forgotten we had--perfect for making this:
http://www.frightcatalog.com/Search/?st=shower+curtain.
I'm thinking this, with a little fake blood in the tub and handprints on the tile, will be creepy in the bathroom that all will use.

Did I mention the theme for this year is "To Die For--or From"?

From now til New Year's will be crazy-busy.

Blogging Sahara

Sheesh! Y'all must have thought I'd fallen off the Blue Ridge Parkway or been attacked by slugs. Actually, except for work (which has been physically and emotionally exhausting this week), there's not much been going on in Scrapsville.

The slugs won the war in the garden. I have 2 tomato plants still standing and beginning to produce, one very small jalapeno pepper plant with a tiny jalapeno, and one bell pepper plant with a small green pepper on it. The squash plants were losing the battle, so I sacrificed them to the slugs to protect the tomato plants.

My daughter turned me on to a podcast "You Bet Your Garden", which has greatly increased my pathetic knowledge base. His recommendations for slugs: Lay a board in the middle of the garden. The slugs will all congregate under it in the heat of the day, and you can just lift the board, gather all those slimy produce thieves and drop them in a jar of soapy water. How simple is that?

The pet fur actually worked for the bigger slugs--they wouldn't cross it--but the tiny ones managed to find the bare spots around the stem and crawl up.

The other thing I learned? Wood mulch is not something you want to use around your plants and in your garden. It encourages slugs and moles and voles. What did I put in my yard this year? At least 30 bags of cedar mulch, both in the garden and around my flowers. And there are mole tunnels leading to the base of one decimated bachelor button plant and one nearly dead sweet william.

I need to have two oak trees taken down, as they are dead or nearly dead, and if there was no disease or infestation in them, I had planned to have them chipped up for mulch. Not sure I'm going to do that now.

The deck garden has done beautifully, though. On the to-do list for today is making pesto, to use up those basil leaves while they're still in good shape. And 2 pepper plants I didn't have room for in the lasagna garden were placed in small pots; lo and behold, there are 2 peppers on them. Other herbs will be cut back a little and hung to dry in the closet: oregano, chives, rosemary.

Then maybe a little hand sewing in the evening. I took the yarn hair off the two Handy Dolls, because it was shedding, and attached the doll hair Jean sent me to one of the dolls and it looks so much better. As soon as I get a few more made up, I'll post a picture.

So that's the scoop in the land of Scraps today.
What's on your to-do list?

Lazy Days

Almost another week has gone by since my last post--and it was pretty skimpy. I've had some work issues simmering in the back of my mind while I did some other, more fun stuff. I had 6 nights off and while I didn't accomplish half the things I meant to, some things did make it off my list.

Thurs. morning I actually got up before 8am and made it over to a co-worker's house for appetizers and cocktails. Remember, THEY got off at 7:30am so it was a reasonable cocktail hour for them. I had ice water, just because I planned to stay up all day, and there aren't many things I like to drink, truth be told. Except chocolate martinis. And kahlua. Neither of which needed to start my day. But it was fun, a chance to see a different side of some folks, and some absolutely delicious appetizers--peach salsa (odd taste, but good), artichoke dip, and pesto brie. Omigosh, was that ever good! I was there 4 hours!

Thursday evening a separate group of us went to see "The Ugly Truth."

Definitely a chick flick and only fluff, but fun to see with some of your girlfriends. We followed that with a meal at Fatz, and some browsing at Big Lots next door to the theater. It was nice to indulge in a Girls' Day Out.

Not much of the sewing I planned got done, but I did sew up 10 blocks for the second half of the Four Seasons Quilt Swap--summer edition.

We could make up to 20, but I'm a little rushed, and a little bored with them right now, and if I need more blocks, I can make more from my stash to fill in.

And I made up two little needle books for myself.

The one with the rosebuds was the first one--the blue one was second and a little better. I didn't have any felted wool, but these were just fine and so simple to make--if they wear out, it won't take an hour to replace them.

I also got this in the mail last week:

Jean sent me some doll hair for the little Handy Dolls I'm making for work. The yarn I was using is not holding up and I'll have to bald them in order to put some new on--but now I have a decent substitute. Can you see the little rosebuds she sent for their dresses?

Too cute!

So it's time for another 3 day stretch and the schedule from you-know-where this month. I'll be perusing your blogs as time permits, but may not be able to post for a bit. Besides, it's the lazy hot days of summer. Hope you get a chance to relax, everyone!

Weekend progress

I've been trying to get the sewing room back into working mode. I didn't like the layout before, because once the ironing board was up, the room was just too crowded and difficult to get around. It was becoming a chore to do anything in there, and what was the point of that?
(There are some photos of the sewing room set-up here and here.)

Before moving the fabric back into the room, I've decided to rearrange somewhat. See these rolling carts in the closet?

They've been holding odds and ends of various crafting endeavors: patches, beads, paints, ribbons, etc. Some are being pulled out and will be put on freecycle because I don't use them any more. I haven't done any beading in a while, but still have hopes, so most of that will stay, but will swap places with the fabric in the stackable bins. I've been folding the small pieces and fat quarters of fabric and stacking them in the drawers, while larger pieces and projects will likely go on shelves and stay in bins.

And the top of the closet?

I plan to go through those magazines eventually, pull out what I want and donate the rest to my quilt bee and/or library. If I can, I'll scan the projects into the computer, but that is farther down the road.

But the big item is the rolling medicine cart I brought from the last hospital I worked in. When they became computerized, I grabbed one of the med carts on our floor, complete with locking key.

Currently, it holds a lot of my rubber stamps and tools. I've been debating what to do with it. On the one hand, it's bulky, heavy, hard to roll around and takes up a lot of space in that closet. On the other hand, I'll most likely never have the opportunity to lay my hands on one of these again, and it is a very handy place to keep all those stamps and scissors and inks, etc. I'd just about decided to just empty its contents into more plastic bins to stack in the closet, when the idea came to roll this into the guest room closet instead. It's rarely used, and the cart can still be rolled onto the back porch if needed when guests come. That will free up more space in the closet for the stackable bins, and the rolling drawers can come out into the room.

Clear as mud? That's okay--I'll post pictures when I finish--which I desperately hope will be today. I need to sew!

As for my non-sewing project? Well, it's coming along, but not finished yet, and since the recipient is a reader, I can't spill the beans just yet. Maybe a sneak peak later....

Carfax

Quick note: Last Saturday I was manning the computer for DD as she shopped for used cars. Not knowing how many cars she'd be test-driving and considering, I paid for 10 searches on C*arfax. (My options were 1, 10, and unlimited). They are only good for a month, and she only needed one.

That leaves 9 searches available until approx. March 21. I hate for these to go to waste, so if any of you are in the market for a used car and would like some info on it, let me know and I'll search it for you. You can email me at cloudtoucher1 (at) gmail.com.

Feeling Creative?

It's time for me to get my next year's sticker for my tag--and I have the opportunity to get one of those vanity tags that I've always wanted for my truck for not so much money.

I want it to reflect my love of quilting, and/or something about nursing and/or cocker spaniels, and be a bit clever.

Do ya think I'm asking a bit much?

Well, anyway, this is what I've come up with so far:

COCKERMOM (but I'm afraid that one will be read wrong)

QLTNG RN

QLTSNDOGS

NITEQULTR (which is an abbreviated version of my yahoo name)

O2BQLTNG (Is this too obscure?)

SCRAPS

Any ideas? Ummm, quickly? I have to do it this week.

Yeah.

I procrastinated again.

Two memes and a blogthing

Mighty Mom over at My Wonderful Life tagged me for a meme/award.

First, I have to list 6 things that make me happy:

1. When J-Man says "I love you." He's the kind of guy who shows his love by making supper, or filling my car with gas, so when he spontaneously tells me he loves me, I'm that mushy 19-year-old all over again.

2. Phone calls from my daughter.

3. Watching Tandi's long ears flop when she takes a flying leap of joy off the porch, the sofa, me, etc.

4. Rainy days.

5. Time spent in the sewing room.

6. Massages. (more on that later)

And then I'm supposed to pass it on to 6 other Kreativ Bloggers---but here I'm going to wimp out. I mean, look at my sidebar. How am I ever going to choose only six of the blogs I try to read daily?
Besides, it's a busy season. So, if you're feeling 6 degrees of happiness today, make a list! And then come let me know so I can go see what puts a smile on your face.

Then Gillian who writes as That British Woman tagged anyone who was reading her blog to post a photo of his or her blogging spot.

So here is the shot from last night:

Mighty Mom also had a blogthing on her post so I had to truck on over and find myself.

You Are Thanksgiving

You are a bit of a homebody who enjoys being in the company of people you love.

It doesn't take a lot to make you happy. You're enjoying life as it is.

You have many blessings in your life, and you are grateful for each one.

You believe that life is about what you *do* have. You feel like you have enough of the good stuff.

What makes you celebrate: Family, friends, and the changing of the seasons.

At holiday get togethers, you do best as: The host of the party

On a holiday, you're the one most likely to: Spend so much energy preparing that it's a full time job

Yesterday afternoon I woke up with a really bad crick in my neck. I don't know if I slept wrong, which is very likely, since sometimes my position is decided by the C-PAP and tubing, or if it was left over from practically lifting one of my little old women out of bed to go to the bathroom; also very likely, since she had a couple of fractured ribs and getting up to a sitting position was difficult. I did the heat and Ibuprofen thing, but by lunchtime today it was only slightly better.

This is interfering with my sewing. And mopping the kitchen floor, but I wasn't too unhappy about that. But I have to go back to work tomorrow night, and this could make my life miserable there.

Each week, a massage therapist couple sets up outside the cafeteria and does chair massages for $1.00/min. Of course, this is always during the day, so we night shift workers don't get to indulge, but when I went to my ACLS class last September, there they were! I managed to get in a 10 minute massage during break and accepted one of their business cards, tucked it in my purse and forgot it. Until today.

I dug it out, called, and Salina said she could take me at 6pm tonight.

Aahhhhhh. Except for the mini-massage, I haven't had one since last December, at Joanne's party. This may need to become semi-annual instead of annual! The pain isn't all gone, but Sooo much better, and my range of motion is better, too. I knew to drink lots of water afterwards, but she also said to pour a cup of apple cider vinegar in a tub full of hot water and soak for about 20 minutes. It's supposed to open my pores to let the toxins out. Hmmm. Bet I'm going to smell just wonderful afterwards. But shall I just smell toxic or really be toxic? Guess I'll go take that bath now.

Taking up the Challenge

Mighty Mom over at My Wonderful Life wants to see just how many bag ladies are out there. So come on, all you old bags--show yourselves!

This hangs on the closet door in my sewing room and holds my hand-me-down MP3 player and headphones. I got it during a fabric shop hop:

Inside the closet, on the right are 3 currently empty project bags. The one on the left is one of two purse/bags made for me by a an old friend.

On the other side of the medicine cart I keep in the closet are two more bags:

The blue plaid one, bought with its mate at a yard sale, holds embroidery hoops. The small canvas one, with my hospital's logo on it, holds Tandi's Frontline and HeartGuard:

Underneath these are three bags in a pile:

The small bag on top is a Coke Rewards backpack that I use as Tandi's travel bag:

The straw bag holds an old velvet dress of DD's, and other items I will be cutting up for a crazy quilt one day. On the bottom of the pile is a bag holding styrofoam balls, sequins, etc. for Christmas ornaments:

Way over in the corner is a small canvas bag that holds a few colored glass bottles I used to have on a window shelf years ago:

This bag has items from our last quilt meeting.

It's one of 5 I bought from Fabric Depot on sale. Two were given as gifts to our monthly hostesses, I use the red one myself, and the other two (starred bag and fleur-de-lis) are waiting for recipients. The small bag in the center of this photo I just received for completing a survey from the sewing machine table people:

Under my sewing table, I have several bags of batting, with bags inside of bags:

I also have two old cosmetic display bags stashed underneath, both of which hold Christmas fabric:

The floral bag I bought last fall at a church yard sale gets used a lot because it's so big, but right now it only holds the comfort quilt top I started for my dearest friend:

Next to it is one of those zippered plastic bags that hold blankets, and it has DD's string quilt and the border and backing fabric.

In front of that is a large paper shopping bag that holds some Christmas bags I've made, and the drapery fabric J-Man suggested I use for more bags. It also hides some Christmas presents!

Some of my bags as well as a few baskets have baggies of smaller projects in progress, or pulled fabrics and patterns waiting to be assembled:

Here are other bags I use, but aren't in the sewing room right now:

This is a stack of what were to be drawstring "pill bags", made for a group of healthcare providers who volunteer every year in 3rd world countries. But our online quilting group made so many the last two years, they didn't need any more this year, so here they sit until I decide what else I can do with them.

And lastly, the backpack I take to work. It's large enough to hold a bag of projects along with other supplies, should I ever get time at work to do anything!

So I think I've outbagged Mighty Mom, but then, I've had a few more years to collect them!

How about you? Are you a bag lady too? Show us!

Twice the Fun

I'm blown away! Lettie, of Polkadot Pineapple, has honored me with the Arte y Pico award! Yep, that makes me a two-time winner. Move over, Oscars! I've got something more valuable!

Actually, she did this on 7/11, and it was so close on the heels of my first Oscar, er, Artie, I forgot to mention it. That makes me seem ungrateful, but really, I'm very grateful. I'm grateful for those of you who visit my little scrapbox and play movie trivia with me and offer suggestions for my quilting dilemmas and like my photos. In the year since I started blogging, I have swapped Halloween goodies with fellow ghosties, swapped quiltlets with people from around the world, found (and sometimes tried) new recipes, learned new words, sponsored another little girl, vented, laughed, mused, and cried. My life is so much richer with all you cyber-friends in it. Who knew?

So, since I've been doubly blessed, I will do the same. First, the Arte y Pico:

This is what it means:
What is the meaning of the expression: Arte y Pico
Basically, ironically, it translates into a wonderful phrase in Mexico, “lo maximo.” LOL! It will never find its counterpart in English, but if it HAD to, it would be something like, Wow. The Best Art. Over the top.

This is why it's given:
This lovely statue is called the "Arte y Pico" award which was created to be given to bloggers who inspire others with their creative energy and talents no matter whether it be in the form of writing, artwork, design, interesting material, or contributions to the blogger community. When a blogger receives this award it is considered a "special honor" and, once presented to you, it is to be passed on to at least 5 other bloggers who meet the criteria.

The rules:

1. You have to pick 5 blogs that you consider deserving of this award.

2. Each award has to have the name of the author and a link to his/her blog to be visited by everyone.

3. Each award winner has to show the award and put the name and link to the blog that presented her/him with the award.

4.The award winner and one who has given the prize have to show the link of "Arte y Pico" blog so everyone will know the origin of this award.

5. To show these rules.

Okey dokey.

Here are 5 more bloggers I'd like to send this on to:

Ellia of Greenbean baby. This is one of the first blogs I ever started reading. Ellia does very intricate cut paper work of the cutest cast of characters you ever saw. She is a SAHM to Diego and Isabella who are no doubt the inspiration for her designs, and married to Ramel, an artist in his own right. If you get a chance, check out her Etsy store--if it hasn't all sold out yet!

Julie Stiles Mills (no, not the actress Julia Stiles) has several blogs, but the one I read most often is Pragmatic Compendium. I won my first giveaway from her site--a copy of "Kite Runner". Julie is so very down to earth, funny, and caring. She would deserve the award for this entry alone, but you must read more. One of her posts gives a website where you can figure out how much your donations to charity thrift shops are worth for tax deduction purposes. She's a very handy gal to have around!

I don't remember how I found Wendy of Wisdom of the Moon, but I'm glad I did, if for no more than her worm composting tutorial. What a blast! She has 4 kiddos, "only one of who was raised from scratch", is in love with her husband and is trying to tread lightly on the world. I've only been reading her blog for about 3 weeks now, but she's on my Reader already.

A blogger I found last week is Jessie, of Diary of a Self-Portrait. She has re-started her "Be Brave" movement (check her July 8 entry), and I am giving it some serious thought. Jessie is an artist with a passion for dogs and life. I am enjoying reading her past entries and learning more about her.

Last, but most definitely not least, is Stefani of Blue Yonder. Mom to 3 bright, active, funny little boys, she writes of her and her husband's efforts to raise these little guys into wonderful men. She turns everything into a life experience or memory for them. We should all have such moms. Life is never dull there, and this post will have you rolling in the aisles. Once you start reading her blog, you're hooked. It's a healthy addiction, though.

Well, that's the roster. My Google Reader list is getting longer and longer by the day, and now I'm starting to have to choose between sewing and blog-reading. (I already chose between my blogroll and housework; THAT one was a no-brainer). If it comes down to choosing between work and visiting all my blog friends, well, we might be back on the red beans and rice diet.

Now for the second part of the "Twice the Fun" title, and your reward for sticking with this extra-long post: I'm having a giveaway.

I know, it's about darn time! Well, I missed my 100th post, and I missed my one year blogiversary, but there are always events to be celebrated here in blogland, no?

Sometime in the next week or so will be my 200th post. (Good Lord willing and the creeks don't rise.) Also, it's my birthday. Today. It was at ten past midnight, to be exact, so let the party begin!

First in the package:

That's a yard of 100% cotton, quilt shop quality fabric, from the "101 Wishes" line by Makower. With it is a little box of tiny gold glass beads, suitable for embellishing or other crafts, and a strip of hand-painted silk.

Next is a package of inkjet magnetic sheets:

I don't remember why I bought these, nor why I bought so many, but the package has never been opened, and I'm sure one of you crafty ladies can figure out a use for them.

Next up:

A package of three little brass stencil cards, also never used.

A set of small rubber stamps with symbols for sun, moon, sky, star:

I still love rubber stamping but I have more than I will ever use. (Not that that has ever stopped me before.) These can be used with fabric paint to stamp labels for the backs of quilts, or on aprons, or with regular ink for stationery, etc.

This is a hanging magnetic board with 2 magnets:

I won a giveaway at BooMama's blog, and couldn't decide which of two items I wanted more, so I won one and bought the other.
I have the wrapped canvas hanging in the kitchen above my Hoosier, but really don't have a place for this board. Since I have the saying on a bracelet already, I thought I'd pass this one on to another life-lover.

Finally, remember the little quiltlet I was making for my swap partner that is too small for the requirements? It's such a cute pattern, and I'm already making myself a larger one, so I will finish this little one and include it. But I can't post a photo until I get the swap quilt mailed off.

Other things might find their way into the box, too, being as it's still a week til it gets mailed. You never know.

Okay, how do you win? Post a comment on this entry anytime between now and midnight July 30. That's it. Well, you have to give me at least an email address or a blogsite so I can reach you, of course. I'll write these all down on strips of paper and have J-Man pick one out at random. Now is the time for all you lurkers to show yourselves! Come out, come out, wherever you are!
